Hi folks, The park needs your help more than ever. Many of you have seen some of my posts about the pressures facing this, one of the most beautiful places in the eastern US and one of the most diverse places on earth. I won't go into all the issues now - but would be happy to answer off-line to those who are unaware of them, and are not able to find my previous posts on the TN-bird webpage. The current issue is that the park is being pressured into keeping Cades Cove grass short, and stop the native plants program. Being a public entity, they need to take public comment seriously, and right now, the majority of what they are recieving are comments that ask the park to mow the fields. Many people don't like the tall grass. So the park is planning to mow in early June. This is not a good time for grassland breeding birds. And birds that breed in grasslands have declined, as a group, significantly more than other groups of birds in the last 2 decades, according to many sources. If you care about the management of the park, PLEASE send your comments to: superintendant, Great Smoky Mountains National Park 107 Park Headquarters Road Gatlinburg, TN 37738 fax: 865-436-1220 email: GRS_superintendant@xxxxxxx The official web site for all the Cades Cove issues is: www.cadescoveopp.com Other officials who need to hear your views: Fran Mainella, Director, National Park Service 1849 C Street, NW Washington, DC 20240 Our Senator, Lamar Alexander considers himeself a friend of the park, and some of his actions through the years have shown that.
