Had a good day yesterday (Saturday, Feb 19) doing my annual 10-stop GBBC survey of White County. Three particular items of interest. First, I had Sandhill Cranes on four of the ten stops ? 120 flying over Carter Street Park in downtown Sparta at about 8:30 a.m., three at Boiling Pond at 11, two flying into the Heritage Marsh at 3, and 40+ in a corn field (Amazing Acres) near Macedonia Pond at 4. Second, I had a pair of Loggerhead Shrike at Randolph Pond in the north county. I have had shrike there before, but never a pair. Particularly promising since shrike are getting harder and harder to find in the Upper Cumberland. Will watch hopefully for signs of nesting activity. Finally - and the delight of the day - were seven Greater White-fronted Geese, found on a pond near Rock Island State Park in the south county. In that case, I was even able to get some good pics for archival purposes. Also had ten duck species and a Coot for the day. All in all, a very pleasant and productive day. Overcast, with temps in the 50's and 60's. Quite a contrast to some GBBC Saturdays when I have endured pouring rain or whiteout show conditions or sub-freezing temps.
