It's been a bit thin here, south of Kingston, for the past several days, except for a constant stream of titmice and a few chickadees. However, there is mammalian action -- I just rescued my new and ill-(but-fun-)placed deck feeder from a matched pair of young raccoons, who pillaged it as my cats looked on, agog. At least in my vicinity, natural forage this year looks excellent and I wonder if my birds are dining native in preference to "store-bought." It seemed as if I had more birds than ever. My chickadees and titmice seemed to both have late nests, and I think their brood(s) are still here. Several pairs of all the birds except juncos and p. finch nest here, but it seems like I've had a bumper crop. Mourning doves, mockers, robins, house sparrows and rock pigeons were all in abundance as well. I've had two white-throats off and on, but I did not see them today when I was doing kitchen duty which was my only time to watch.
