I have one theory: I work in Oak Ridge, where the major traffic lights are suspended on arching, tapering, hollow, metal posts. These light posts are pre-drilled with holes to accommodate various configurations of traffic lights. In Oak Ridge, many of these holes are not occupied by traffic lights so the ever-resourceful starlings have taken them over and seem to breed successfully almost through the entire winter, to my dismay. I wonder if they are not sometimes electricuted at insulation breaches in the wiring that runs thru the posts, and, elsewhere, just by stepping on the wrong spot when they land on a powerline? (YAY!!!) Death To Starlings!!! My wife remarked that the same thing had happened to her at another intersection a few weeks before. I wonder if anyone else has seen or heard of this phenomena and if so if they might know what caused it.
