Comments: My wife and I went to examine a nice wetland area in the central
part of White County. This area is becoming increasingly "birdy" and is worth
a regular check. During our visit, the temperature was around 85 F. with
partly cloudy skies and gentle breeze. Given what we saw, it turned out to be
a remarkable evening. The wetland is located on the south side of Gum Springs
Mountain Rd. about 1/2 mile east of the White County Landfill. GPS =
35.898006, -85.569196.

Wood Duck 55 This location seems to be a reliable site for summer roost.
Mostly females present.
Mallard 4
Northern Bobwhite 2 Seen crossing the road.
Wild Turkey 4
Great Blue Heron 20 17 were seen at the wetland area, clearly an evening
roosting site. The other three were seen at Boiling Pond nearby.
Great Egret 4 Two at the wetland and two at Boiling Pond nearby.
Little Blue Heron 2 Both seen at the wetland area. Smaller that GREG,
with grayish green legs and distinctive bi-colored bill associated with
immature birds.
Green Heron 3 All seen at the wetland.
Black Vulture 4
Turkey Vulture 6
Bald Eagle 1 Immature flew over the wetland area and then landed and
perched in a dead tree overlooking the water.
