At 8:15 PM while stopped at the intersection of Montvale and Montvale Station Roads in Maryville, Blount County I observed a huge flock of 500+ Chimney swifts wheeling like a funnel over the intersection. There was a large storm cell with lightning a few miles to the northeast and gusty winds in the area. Before I could turn into the Baptist church parking lot for a better look they were out of sight to the west. I have only seen a few Chimney swifts this spring and this flock is by far the largest I have ever seen in 50 years of birding.
