Today's visitors at the Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge in Meigs Co. at Birchwood produced a record high total since the hooded crane was first seen on Dec. 13. Eighteen states were represented among the 153 visitors, for a visits total to date of 1202. The previous high attendance for one day was 130. A Washington visitor raised the total number of states noted to 33. The hooded crane was in-and-out of view until about 1:30 p.m. It wasn't seen again after that time. Two juvenile whooping cranes were visible much of the day. Fewer bald eagles were seen today, but a snow goose and a great egret were added. A common goldeneye was identified by a visitor. I would expect even more visitors tomorrow. Please park as close together as possible, and try to leave the 'traffic circle' open at the bottom of the parking area near the portable restrooms. Please try to find the visitors list in the gazebo and sign up. These lists will help to demonstrate the economic contributions of the watchable wildlife community to the state and local economies of Tennessee. Charles Murray Birchwood, TN
