It seems to be a good year for Fox Sparrows in the Knoxville area. As I reported yesterday, a number were found during the Knoxville CBC on Saturday (2 Jan). I also had 2 during the Norris CBC on 19 Dec. Last night (4 Jan) as I left work around 5:45pm, I heard a Fox Sparrow singing in the brushy area around our parking lot (this is in west Knox Co off of Hardin Valley Rd). This morning (5 Jan) I again had a 1st-winter Herring Gull in a group of Ring-billed Gulls passing over the house. Based on their flight path (assuming they are flying a straight line), I suspect they are roosting on Ft Loudon Lake somewhere near Concord and likely heading to the landfill off of I-75 in Anderson Co. That would be about 20 miles as the gull flies.
