Headed up to the Foothills Parkway (Blount Co.) today to look for
migrating raptors. I noticed some birders at the double pulloff (pulloffs on
both sides of road where KTOS has their watches). Doug Shneeberger and the
Stoner's were there and had just began to see hawks moving. This was around
10:45 and we watched here until noon and had ~50 Broad-winged hawks off to the
south over Happy Valley. I think they had maybe 10 more before I arrived. We
went our separate ways and I headed up to Look Rock. When I got out of my jeep
I began seeing BWs shooting low over the parking lot. I stayed here close to an
hour and had ~70 BWs and 1 Osprey. Visibility was limited here by trees so I
might have missed some that weren't directly overhead. Headed up the trail to
the tower but had only 2 more BWs there. I went back down to the double pulloff
around 2:30 and had another 66+ BWs distant to the south with 1 group of 40+
being my biggest of the day. I left at 3:30.      I ended up with 188+
Broad-winged hawks and 1 Osprey. Chimney swifts were numerous and local birds
included Turkey vultures, 1 Red-tailed hawk, 2 Common ravens, and 2 Pine
warblers heard. Only 2 Monarchs were seen.
