Followed up on Terry Witt's post from last Saturday regarding Scissor-Tailed Flycatchers on Florence Road in Ruther. On both Saturday and Sunday, July 10 & 11, in late afternoon found two adults (about 10 inch tails) and one young bird with a stubby tail. The dickcissels were also heard and seen where Terry reported them at the intersection of Florence Road and Asbury Lane. For visitors from Nashville, the easiest and best marked route is: I-24 to Exit 70 (Highway 102-Almaville Road). At end of ramp, turn left back under the interstate and continue northeast about 1.5 miles to Old Nashville Highway. Go south on Old Nashville Highway toward Murfreesboro about 5 miles. Turn right onto Florence Road and continue about 1.3 miles. The first large overpass is I-24. Pause just before the overpass for the dickcissels (corner of Asbury Lane). Continue across the overpass and look for a small electrical substation on the right. You can park here (room for 2 cars) or continue about 100 yds and park on the right shoulder. The STFC were to the west on the wires in this field (wires running both parallel and perpendicular to the road). The young bird will look like a Western FC at first glance. If you use www.mapquest.com, zoom in on the intersection of I-24 and I-840, and look for Florence Road cutting across the northeast corner.
