Here's the link to story. If you can send it out and it gets more hits,
they'll give it a more prominent spot (and let me write about things like
this more often!)

Thanks. My editor said no to a story on this, but I'm going to try to get
something online anyway.

Hello Scott,

I received your e-mail from Charles Murray. Last night Marie Sutton and
Phyllis Deal spotted a strange crane at the Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge.
Luckily, Charles Murray arrived on the scene and knew to call me in for
verification.

Crane Description:
Smaller than a Sandhill. A shorter beak than the Canadian Sandhills on the
HWR. Makes a higher pitched call, and is not the same sound. Black body with
long tertial feathers. White Neck. Red cap. Black around the eyes.

I am looking for an expert birder to confirm the species, but it looks very
strongly like a hooded crane. I work with the crane foundation tracking
Whooping cranes. I assisted in Sandhill Crane captures in the fall, and this
certainly does not look like either of those two species

I’ve attached pictures. The movie file requires Quicktime to play. Please
let me know if you have any insight or want more details. I can be reached
at (608) 447-0948 <tel:%28608%29%20447-0948> . Also, Charles Murray, the
local Crane Enthusiast offers his contact: (423) 285-0910
<tel:%28423%29%20285-0910> . If you forward this e-mail, please remove our
numbers.

Thanks! Hope to hear from you soon!
