Actually, all of these rare finches (and Bohemian Waxwing) have distinctive calls, and a sound recording would be an excellent way to document any of them (often easier to get than a good photo in the wild away from a feeder). This is a winter to keep the point-and- shoot or the phone charged up and in a convenient pocket, ready to grab and start recording on a moment's notice if you see or hear anything suspicious in the treetops! These handy devices along with good sonogram software for home computers are making audio documentation of rarities vastly easier than it was even just a few years ago.
