Blount County, east Tennessee This coming Saturday there will be a field trip with the Knoxville Chapter of the Tennessee Ornithological Society to KYKER BOTTOMS in Blount County, TN. We will meet at 8:00 a.m. at the upper lot (the one with the observation deck, with the big pond across the street). Charlie Muise will be the leader. Directions: - From Knoxville, take Hwy. 129 south. Approximately 4 miles south of Maryville, Hwy. 129 turns left at a traffic light (RiteStop Market on the left). Continue to follow Hwy. 129 approximately 8 miles to Garland Road (WMA sign at intersection). Turn right on Garland Road. Continue on Garland to stop sign and turn right. A short distance along this road is the parking area on the right. There is no planned meeting place in Knoxville for carpooling. I may not be going, but I will help with organizing for anyone who desires a ride with someone else. Contact me at dtrently@xxxxxxx if you plan to go and want a ride. As others contact me, I will try to help coordinate rides. Some of us will choose to slog through the thick brier-laced vegetation, while others can stick to the levee. Sturdy footwear and clothes that can get dirty are suggested, and clothes that can withstand small thorns may be desirable. Some folks may even choose knee boots. This is a good time of year for LeConte's Sparrow. We will focus on sparrows and any waterfowl that are about. Hopefully the Loggerhead Shrike we've seen the last few years will have returned by then.
