Subject: Mountain Birds Part Deux

Robert Meehan, his brother James, and I also went to Roan Mountain this
weekend, with the intent of meeting up with Scott, Ali, and Jacob, and
despite not being able to find the rest of the group, we did find some
good birds of our own. Our best bird for was a Saw-whet Owl on the side of
the road going from Carver's Gap to the summit, which even posed for
photos. After our lifer look on the Tennessee side, the owl flew to the
NC side and posed once again. We got great photos of an Alder Flycatcher
near the parking lot next morning, and had many Canada Warblers near the
summit. Found GW Warbler, Broad-winged Hawk, and Willow Flycatcher at
Hampton Creek Cove, along with the usuals there. Afterwards, we gave up on
finding the rest of our group (phones didn't work) and drove up
Grandfather Mountain, which produced three Ravens and two Crossbills.
After hiking down to the parking lot from the Grandfather Trail, we got
caught in a storm that produced 112 mph gusts, and 75 mph sustained winds,
for over two hours!!!! It was quite a reminder that, as observers of
nature, we are also very much at her mercy.
