It might be early (I'm not good about keeping track), and I haven't heard any here yet, but my nocturnal, maddeningly monotonic repeater during breeding season is a Yellow-billed cuckoo. For a version of the monotone I'm talking about, check out the "Song" link at this Patuxent Bird Infocenter page: http://www.mbr-pwrc.usgs.gov/Infocenter/i3870id.html The Flathead Audubon Soc link is also a great resource, and features the "daytime" song of the YB cuckoo http://www.flatheadaudubon.org/content/birds/songs/index.htm The first time I heard that call at night, I scratched my head for days until I chanced to hear it make one characteristic "kowlp" before it went back to the monotone. I'll be very interested in others' suggestions. Liz Singley Kingston (Roane Co.) TN P.S. Two of my cats brought in the first ticks of the season tonight. Bleah. That part of spring is here early, too. ------- Original Message ------- From : Sandy Perry[mailto:bluebird1684@xxxxxxxxxxx] Sent : 3/21/2007 5:58:06 PM To : tn-bird@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Cc : Subject : FW: [TN-Bird] Help We have a bird in our the greenbelt behind our house that starts calling after dark and calls off and on until 5 or 6 a.m. The call is one monotone sound after another with as few as 1 repetition and as many as 44 repetitions. Any ideas would be appreciated.
