The one Oriole who came to our backyard here in Montgomery County was so
beautiful we named him Elvis. Like the King, he was with us all too short a
time. Next year I will have my oranges ready. (Do you think he might eat
fried peanut-butter sandwiches?)

I had a Baltimore Oriole, too, a male feeding in my pines this afternoon. This
is a new yard bird for me, and splendid in feather and song he was --- what a
color, and a new voice in my woods!! Watched my Summer tanagers courting while
the Carolina wrens played chess with the Blue jays, who want a shot at the 3
wren babies nesting in the winch post of my boat trailer. The wrens are
tireless
foragers who brought a steady stream of fat bugs to the babies all afternoon. A
beautiful afternoon for sitting outside with binoculars and a brace of fat old
sleepy cats who couldn't care less about spring migration.
Happy bird days to you.

After seeing a single male Baltimore Oriole at my hummingbird feeder
on Monday last week, I put out several oranges to see what might
happen. My first male Oriole appeared the following day. By
Saturday, May 5 I had a dozen orange halves placed on several trees
in my yard; highest count on Saturday was 22 Orioles at one time.

That makes 21 more Baltimore Orioles than I have ever before seen in
my yard at one time!
