Paris, Henry County

Last year we had a very reliable spot for American Woodcocks,
thankfully located right beside our yard. This is an area of
successional growth near woods with a grassy lane running through it.
We had tried listening for Woodcocks at the gate by this lane a few
times in recent days, but we got our first bird at dusk on Tuesday,
February 18. We enjoyed listening to him "peent" many times before
going into his display flight. Due to the weather, we haven't been
back to the spot to listen on subsequent evenings.

This same area was very productive recently for Hermit Thrushes... my
husband had five in one short span of time there one day in early
February and it was reliable for at least one bird every time he
checked.

The same day the Woodcock was heard, my husband had 24 species in the
yard in the span of one hour that morning, a good count for our yard
in that amound of time at this time of year.

On this same day, we went out to Big Sandy NWR and some surrounding
areas of Kentucky Lake and observed some nice ducks... with Common
Goldeneye in almost every pond or lake view (even swimming among the
boats in the Paris Landing State Park Marina). Nothing unusual to
report, but we noticed that the warm weather had brought out lots of
armadillos... we had 6 digging in the fields in one view in the Big
Sandy NWR.

A few days ago we had a pair of White-breasted Nuthatches checking out
the nest box they used in our yard last year. I hope they use it
again! (This is assuming they are the same birds, but I believe that
they are due to the confident way they entered the box and the
familiar pattern the male traveled as he displayed up and down the
trunk of the tree.)
