TN-birders,
Dollyann and I checked out the Duck River Unit of the Tennessee National
Wildlife Refuge in Humphreys County this morning and early afternoon. If you
really, really, really, really like Mallards, then this is the place you need
to be! There must have been 5-8,000 ducks in the area with the vast majority of
them Mallards. Lots of Greater White-fronted Geese and smatterings of several
other species too, but NO Eurasian Wigeon as far as we could tell. We found
probably 50-75 American Wigeons and checked them carefully but no luck. Lots of
these ducks are a LONG way from the refuge road and even with a decent scope
very difficult to ID.
This is not to say the Eurasian Wigeon is not still there. Just that we didn’t
find it in 2 hours scanning the flocks.
Great birding,
