Chattanooga/Hamilton Co.,TN. Riverside Dr. @ Latta St. Today while trying to boost my 2004 Tennessee list we observed 248 +/- Eurasian Collared-Doves at the intersection of Riverside Dr. and Latta St. These doves seemed to be everywhere in this small confined area both left and right of Latta St. The other purpose of this post is to bring attention to two other doves in the mix. Most likely they are just two other collared doves but I don't know for sure what they were. My first thought was that I was looking at a Ringed Turtle-Dove. I saw that species years ago in Florida. At first I only saw one of the different looking doves. My very first impression was that this bird was lighter than all the other doves around it. Then I noticed that it was slightly smaller than all the other birds. We watched this dove for several minutes through our spotting scope from less than 100 feet away. It was definately whitish and not gray. It's primaries were pale gray and it's coverts were white also. I looked in National Geographics and noted that I should be looking for white along the outer web. Truthly what I saw was dark areas along the edge of the outer web which would suggest Eurasian C-Dove but it was not as dark as the field guide shows. It was only later that we spotted the second variation of the other collared doves. This one was also smaller. It's color was almost a very light pale creamy buff. I never got the chance to see its outer web. Both birds stick out like a sore thumb! They are obviously differently looking! There were many cars and trains in the area. It was impossible for me to hear any other sounds other than those the collard doves were making. Does anyone out there have any other information they can send to me so that I might look for something more to aid in make a positive identification?
