Information on county occurrence of the Eurasian Collared-Dove had been previously requested on Tennessee Birding. Responses are heartedly acknowledged. In summary, the first Tennessee record of the Eurasian Collared-Dove was in Shelby County on May 23, 1994, with the first confirmed breeding of the species the next week (Jeff Wilson). The next locations outside of Shelby County were October 24, 1994, in Hamilton County (Clyde Blum), and October 28, 1994, in Gibson County. It is interesting to note the spread of the species in the state already in 1994. The species was first recorded on a Tennessee Christmas Bird Count (Chattanooga) with five individuals on December 17, 1994. The species has been recorded in 79 of the 95 Tennessee counties (83%). A record was not reported in 16 counties--Campbell, Cheatham, Claiborne, Cocke, Hancock, Jackson, Johnson, Morgan, Scott, Sevier, Smith, Sullivan, Trousdale, Unicoi, Union, and Van Buren. Please report any sightings for these counties. Apparent habitat preferences include cemeteries and parks because of evergreen trees, and railroad lines because of grain spills and collect around granaries (Jeff Wilson). The greatest concentration is in Shelby County where 3,000 were counted at one time in one field of view at one location in Memphis in 2007 (Jeff Wilson, Mike Todd).
