Tunica Co, MS
Ensley Bottoms,
Robco Lake
Shelby Co. TN

The Ferruginous Hawk was seen Jan. 2 at 8:30 AM and 2:30 PM, perched on corn
stalks in the tall grass north of the pivot irrigation system off Buck
Island Road between 304 and Hambrick Rd.

A flock of Sandhill Cranes (31), an Immature Lesser Black-backed Gull, 4
western Meadowlarks, hundreds of Lapland Longspurs plus Lesser Canada and
Cackling Geese were seen in the area. There were 8 Lesser Canada Geese and only
 one
Cackling seen off Hambrick Road to the east of Kirby. Of course thousands of
Snow, Ross's and Greater White-fronted Geese fill the fields and skies in
north Tunica Co.

An afternoon visit to TVA Lake produced a single Surf Scoter, Canvasback,
Ring-neck, Hooded Mergansers and a leucistic Lesser Scaup that was in stunning
rufous and white coloration. At the pits, I had 3 Sanderling but they were
feeding in the spread fields to the west, a few scattered Least Sandpipers but
I'm sure there are more as they can get lost in the ruts out there. The
Forster's Tern was still at Robco Lake but the duck population is less than
half
what it was a week ago.
