August 24, 2003 Ensley Bottoms Shelby Co. TN Had a study session for 4-1/2 hours this morning and between 9:30 and 11:30 there was a movement of shorebirds, both dropping in and leaving. The numbers remain about as high as I've ever seen them over such a long period of time. Today the 2 Uplands were flushed from the field they were in yesterday. Two Buff-breasted were seen in one of the spread fields, a Baird's and a molting adult Sanderling were ranging around in the hordes of peeps. The Wilson's Phalarope was feeding just as frenetically as yesterday and both Long-billed and Short-billed Dowitchers appeared over night. The weekend shorebird species total was a fine round 20, it doesn't get too much better More Caspian Terns were using the river along with another Ring-billed Gull and 4 Forster's Terns. The Least Tern numbers had doubled from yesterday. Did not see any sign of the Wood Storks today............ Jeff R.
