May 16, 2004 Ensley Bottoms Shelby Co. TN I worked my way back south through Tipton Co. this morning and checked a few sandbars on the falling Mississippi River but had little luck. The Wind Birds did not fail me when I reached the pits. There was a good days work ahead of me and I was joined by Sonny Gray in searching the flocks. The birds were nervous due to high flying Mississippi Kites, Red-shouldered and Broad-wings that were passing over. Of the 18 species of shorebirds seen today the best were, a late Baird's Sandpiper and a bright Sanderling molting into breeding plumage, both poised for photos. The nice mix of shorebirds included, Killdeer, Semipalmated Plovers 9, Lesser Yellowlegs 16, Greater YL 1, Spotted 2, Black-necked Stilts (12 active nests and another 8 amorous couples), Semipalmated Sandpiper 478, Western Sandpiper 2, Least Sandpiper 127, Pectoral Sandpiper 17, White-rumped Sandpiper 39, Dunlin 21 (most in full breeding plumage), Stilt Sandpiper 7, Long-billed Dowitcher 2, Short-billed Dowitcher 9. We checked out the Bald Eagles nest and I guess the birds finally gave up as there was no activity and no adult on the nest;o(. On the good side we were able to find 3 WESTERN KINGBIRDS, one on a fence line, another sitting on a structure next to where a nest was located last year and another flying from the rear of the steam plant. Painted Buntings were singing on territory. A Blue Grosbeak was seen with nesting material. Good Birding!!! Jeff R.
