The 66th consecutive Elizabethton Spring Count was held on 25 April 2009. 41 observers in 7 parties spent 94 party hours & 7 nocturnal hours in the field, with 3 feeder watchers also participating. 152 species were tallied, which is slightly above the recent (last 25 years) average of 146 species. Highlights, in checklist order: Virginia Rail - 2 & Sora - 4. Dunlin - 1 (present for 3 weeks). Eur. Collared-Dove - 2 Black-billed Cuckoo - 1 N. Saw-whet Owl - 2 Loggerhead Shrike - 2 27 species of warblers - - but few purely transient species (i.e., Nashville - 1, Cape May - 1, N. Waterthrush - 1, Palm - 10, & several Yellow-rumps), while most breeding species were well represented (e.g., Black-thr. Green - 171, Hooded - 163, Ovenbird - 127, Black-thr. Blue - 67). Absent were: Barn Owl, Com. Nighthawk, Acadian Flycatcher, Summer Tanager, & Purple Finch.
