Elizabethton CBC: the 61st consecutive CBC at Eliz. was held on Sunday, 14
Dec. Seventeen observers in 6 parties endured dreary conditions on a cold &
drizzly day to observe 71 species (which is near the recent average). Notable
species were a Selasphorus hummingbird (probably Rufous) and TWO Gray Catbirds.
Also good were Green-wg. Teal (2), Red-br. Merganser (3), Bald Eagle (1 im.),
Red-shouldered Hawk (1 - scarce in NE Tenn.), Red-br. Nuthatch (2), House Wren
(2), Brown Thrasher (2), Palm Warbler (1), Purple Finch (1), & Pine Siskin (2).
A pretty good day, especially considering the weather. Notably absent were
vultures (hunkered down somewhere) & Black Duck.

Roan Mountain CBC: This count was held for the 51st time in 54 years (snowed
out 3 times in the past) on Monday 15 Dec. Three observers in 2 parties found
43 species (about average) on this high elevation count. There was 1-2 inches
of snow & ice above 4000 ft (but the road was clear), with blustery winds.
Highlights were Chipping Sparrow (1) & Red Crossbill (2). Regulars included
Ruffed Grouse (3), Com. Raven (3), Red-br. Nuthatch (24) & Pine Siskin (71).
