This Summer's Living Bird (a magazine of Cornell Lab of Ornith.) has an article about IL Prairie Chickens and how they were once marketed and enjoyed by, especially, Mark Twain. While it is almost certain that it was habitat loss and degradation rather than hunting that resulted in the present circumstance of a mere remnant population, we are reminded that there really are circumstances where rules and regulations need to respond to situational ethics. We are reminded, of course, that Audubon himself, in very different times, shot and ate songbirds, although he did not shoot them solely with the purpose of eating them. Weighing the risk of loss of Whoopers against the benefits (to some, of course) of Sandhills is simply an issue that we must, as a society, confront. It seems to me wholly appropriate that TOS be particularly supportive of wild bird preservation while, as individuals, we realize that there are other legitimate points of view.
