Ensley Bottoms
Shelby Co. TN

There was little use in trying to run through the shorebirds at the "pits"
today as there was a hawk migration in progress and a feeding frenzy at noon of
over 60 Mississippi Kites ( adult male and female - juveniles and subadults)
low over the pools making for a bunch of nervous nellys. The Wind Bird
numbers are down as we have had northwest winds for a week and when raptors
keep
your nerves on edge, you might as well head south. Still 12 species with 2
immature Westerns today but the only show was way over our heads. Still
waiting
on my first juvenile Pectoral Sandpiper to show.

The following raptor species were counted going south from 9:30 till 12:30:
Lots of low feeding kites but still some movement of kites migrating very
high, 14 counted with - Kestrels - 5 (3 adults - 2 imm) mixed in and riding
thermals off the ridge, 8 Broad-winged Hawks (6 adult- 2 imm), 4 Cooper's Hawks

(3 imm- 1 adult) , 2 adult Red-shouldered and 3 adult Red-tails. The 2
immature Cooper's and 2 immature Red-tails hatched down in the bottoms are
still
hanging around.

Pretty good mix of migrators taking advantage of the northwest winds, making
for pretty good traveling weather.
Good Birding !!!
