Hello Dean, We just had an olive sided flycatcher at the end of our street. I heard him calling, and saw him fly from one tree top to another. ran inside to get camera. When I returned outside he had flown further away across the field of the neighboring farm, heard him call 2 or 3 more times then gone. Bird was seen well from behind for about a minute with my 10x Swarovskis and all field marks noted. Very dark flycatcher with dark back and wings with no clear wingbars. Edge of the dark vest just visible on upper flanks below wing. Slight crest. Bright white throat sharply contrasting against dark face. Sturdy bill with yellow base. Appropriate primary and wing length noted. And white tufts were just poking out above rump. Bird was perched on highest snag, flew up to flycatcher, and then disappeared down west-facing side of the ridge. Robinson lists a few records from late July and early August. This is my earliest of a few fall records here though I had a "probable" bird here in mid-August last year. Also my first true migrant for fall here in the yard but have had some more local post-breeding dispersals including an immature Prairie Warbler on 26 July and female/immature Am Redstart on 30 July.
