Another feature that can help separate Long and Short-billed Dowitcher, though 
usually difficult to see in the field, is the barring on the tail.  
Surprisingly, it is visible on both photos shared.  Short-billed Dowitchers, 
seen in these photos, have white and black bands of approximately equal width.  
Long-billed Dowitchers have thick black bands and thin white bands.  In both 
pictures posted, the tail is visible and it clearly has black and white bands 
of equal width.
