May 23, 2007 western Greene County--Wal-Mart Distribution Center (WMDC), etc. David Kirschke and I checked a few good spots in the western end of Greene County this evening and found a sizable number of species, including a good number of summer residents and transients. A partial list includes: Wood Duck (6) Blue-winged Teal (WMDC) Northern Bobwhite (3) Little Blue Heron (adult WMDC) Green Heron (2 WMDC) Semipalmated Plover (WMDC) Solitary Sandpiper (2 WMDC) Spotted Sandpiper (WMDC) Dunlin (Baughard Hill Road) Eurasian Collared-Dove (Highway 11-E approximately 0.5 mile east of West Greene High School) Yellow-billed Cuckoo Eastern Wood-Pewee Willow Flycatcher (Highway 348 opposite the Lick Creek Bottoms Wildlife Management Area unit in Beulah community) Eastern Kingbird (4) Purple Martin (9) Tree Swallow (3) Northern Rough-winged Swallow (4) Barn Swallow (16) Blue-gray Gnatcatcher Brown Thrasher Common Yellowthroat (2) Yellow-breasted Chat (2) Chipping Sparrow Grasshopper Sparrow Blue Grosbeak (2) Indigo Bunting (14) Orchard Oriole Passerine numbers seem low for this time of year. This is the impression that I have had since early April, and recent birding trips tend to bear this out. Blue-gray Gnatcatcher and Indigo Bunting, normally quite abundant in western Greene County, have consistently been scarcer this spring, as have a number of other species.
