The seventh annual Duck River CBC was held yesterday, December 22nd 2018
with nice weather for a change. The early morning fog soon lifted for
warm, sunny conditions throughout the day.
23 observers in 11 parties covered 24 miles in 4 and a half hours owling,
59 miles in 45 hours on foot, 226 miles in 23 hours by car and 4 miles in 4
hours by boat.
Start time 3:00 a.m. end time 5:15 p.m.
Low temp 27 degrees, high 50 degrees.
We tallied an impressive 130 species plus a Sora/Virginia Rail and a
Krider’s Red-tailed Hawk on count day. All our stakeout birds were located
along with plenty of surprises. The only thing I would consider a miss is
Palm Warbler, which has not been seen in the area recently.
Highlights for the count include two species new for the count, GRAY
CATBIRD and the unidentified medium sized RAIL, a BLUE-WINGED TEAL in the
upper Bottoms, a continuing male EURASIAN WIGEON, four male COMMON
MERGANSERS, heard only flyover SANDHILL CRANES, a DUNLIN still hanging out
with the Refuge Killdeers, THAYER’S and LESSER BLACK-BACKED Gulls with a
large, temporary group of loafing Gulls North of the bridge, a FORSTER’S
TERN, BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS at two locations, two adult GOLDEN EAGLES,
a really pretty adult KRIDER’S HAWK in Cherry Bottoms, a BARN OWL, a
MERLIN, 3 PEREGRINE FALCONs, 7 RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES, 5 species of wrens
including SEDGE and multiple MARSH and HOUSE, a staked out HARRIS’S SPARROW
on private land in the Squeeze Bottoms area, LECONTE’S, VESPER and
LINCOLN’S SPARROWs, a pair of BREWER’S BLACKBIRDS, an ORANGE-CROWNED
WARBLER, three COMMON YELLOWTHROATs and three PINE WARBLERS.
