The black-necked stilts reappeared yesterday (04/15/10) in Pool 6 at the corner of Refuge Lane and Lawrence Creek Rd but later in the day were observed in Pool 4. Today only one was observed in Pool 4 along with a black-bellied plover. Pool 4 was pumped down more today so it should provide some great shorebird habitat this weekend. Park on Refuge Lane at the first parking lot on your left. There are three water control structures next to the parking lot going into Pool 11 and then one angled water control structure going into Pool 4. Walk straight across the road past the gate. Pool 4 will be on your left. It should not take much more than a 100 yard walk to come upon plenty of fresh mudflats. The long and narrow Pool 11 will be on your right. Pick up a fishing brochure at the Kiosk at the entrance to learn the Pool numbers/names. If you don't find them at the above two spots the try Pool 5 which is on the opposite side of the Pool 11 levee. There is a big parking lot there that is the old parking lot for the observation building, which has been moved to coming off Haul Rd, but this is still Pool 5. Also again observed 3 Am. golden plovers that Scott and I had seen the previous day in Pool 3 along the "new" auto tour route. Also picked up three more off the 1/2 levee but this is a long walk to reach the area where they were located.
