Saturday March 13 Duck River Bottoms Humphreys/Benton County Cyndi and I revisited Duck River Bottoms this afternoon under cloudy skies and a breezy 47 degrees. We had fairly moderate success, tallying 43 species. Numbers of waterfowl were predictably down with the exception of 1500-2000 Northern Shovelers in various pockets of water and 400-500 Gadwall in the Duck River by the large Great Blue Heron rookery. As hoped ,though, there were 40 -50 Blue-winged Teal that have recently arrived, as well as a comparable amount of Hooded Mergansers . Most of the other likely species were found but in much smaller numbers than usual including Mallards, Ring-necked Ducks, a few Bufflehead, 7 Common Goldeneye, several Green-winged Teal, 3 Canvasbacks, and 3 pairs of Wood Ducks. 3 mature and 4 immature Bald Eagles were also seen. Killdeer, Red-winged Blackbirds, Eastern Meadowl;arks, Common Grackles, and Brown-headed Cowbirds were plentiful. Finally , we ended the day with a mild surprise when Cyndi found ~ 70 American Pipits feeding in the grassland surrounding a shallow pond. Another fun day , for sure. Conspicuously absent were American Widgeons and Northern Pintails with neither being found today. Anxiously waiting for the shorebirds and spring migrants to arrive! It's not. -The Lorax, by Dr. Seuss =================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBER===================== The TN-Bird Net requires you to SIGN YOUR MESSAGE with first and last name, CITY (TOWN) and state abbreviation.
