Sorry for the late posting (bronchitis, bad bronchitis), but Dr. Fred Alsop
led an energetic (and cold) group of birders on a field trip from Pigeon
Forge (Sevier County) TN to Cades Cove (Blount County) TN on Jan. 18 as
part of the Wilderness Wildlife Week conservation event in Pigeon Forge.
By my unofficial count, 34 species were found, including at least 5
Red-shouldered hawks in Cades Cove (along Sparks Lane); Hermit Thrush and
Red-breasted nuthatch were seen on the Foothills Parkway in Wears Valley on
the way west.

Red-tailed, Sharp-shinned, and Cooper's hawks were also seen during the
outing, capping off an excellent birding trip led by a superb field trip
leader and birding authority, Fred Alsop.
