[TN-Bird] Re: Dove Building A Nest ?

Actually the trigger this time of year for mourning doves to start breeding
is as much or more temperature than food availability. 2 or 3 days with
temps in the 50s to 60s and there is a burst of courting, mating, and nest
building. Their courtship flight - very deep wingbeats with wings almost
touching at top and bottom strokes, and long glides with the wings held
stiff with wing tips slightly below the plane of the body - become very
common under these conditions. I've seen a lot of dove breeding activity
around Knoxville this week.

Hi David, and all,

Yes, Mourning Doves build nests this time of year - and just about
any time of year if they have a ready food source.

And a Mourning Dove nest rarely looks more substantial than you
describe. I watched a nest when I was in college. I assume it was
the same female, but do not know for sure. The nest, built outside a
very busy student center, in an ornamental shrub, had gaping holes in
the bottom and eggs fell out more than once and chicks fell out
twice. I don't think that nest was ever successful.
