Roan Mtn, on the Carter Co, TN - - Mitchell Co, NC border
Red Crossbills (6 to15+) are being seen regularly at Carver's Gap, right at the
state line. There is an excellent cone crop in the spruce-fir forest this year,
which accounts for the crossbill's presence. Just hang out around the parking
area at Carver's Gap and listen for their flight calls. They have been
observed
feeding on cones, picking up grit in the gravel areas, and drinking from rain
puddles (when available). Males, females, and streaked immature birds are
present. They should remain as long as the food lasts, which should be several
months, including during the TOS Fall Meeting in Johnson City later this month.
Field trips during the meeting will go to Carver's Gap.
Also seen there today (3 Sep.) were Pine Siskins, good numbers of warblers (12
species), Scarlet Tanagers, Rose-br. Grosbeaks, Red-br. Nuthatches, etc.
