22 folks kicked off the first event today of the new Wings of Winter Birding
Festival. We birded Cross Creek Wildlife Refuge in Stewart County This
refuge is normally closed all winter but we were led today by the park manager.
Much of the water was frozen over so there was probably far less waterfowl
there than normal. Our bird list was probably around 55 species. There were
only a handful of Snow Geese but the two continuing Mute Swans were present.
There was a nice flock of Greater White-fronted Geese.
The highlight of the trip for a small few of us was a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK that
was seen soaring in the distant.
A great start to Tennessee’s newest festival.
