In response to Chuck Nicholson's just posted email, I found (3) happy little Brown- Headed Nuthatches today at Cove Lake St. Park (Campbell County- Caryville) They were very vocal thus easier to find today. Perhaps the warm day inspired them. They were located near the picnic table/bathroom area once again. They seem to hang out in this area. As I mentioned in earlier post, @ least one individual has been here for around 8 months. I saw the Blue Phase Snow Goose also as well as good numbers of ducks on the lake. A few years ago Ed Manus and I had at Brown-headed Nuthatch at Anderson County Park during the Christmas Bird Count. This park is at the north end of a peninsula jutting into Norris Lake. The opposite, north side of the lake is Campbell County. I thought at that time that it was a candidate for the northern-most state record. I studied maps today and Cove Lake is a couple miles north of the site where the nuthatch was observed on the Norris CBC. We had no luck with a Ross’s Goose. There has been a white “Snow Goose” of sorts that has been out there for the past few years and we saw it, but I doubt it’s a true Snow Goose. There was, however, a “blue” form of Snow Goose in with some Canada Geese. The real find was thanks to Frank’s incredibly keen hearing, when he said he thought he heard a Brown-headed Nuthatch. Sure enough, after spishing a bit, we were able to find one in a pine tree near the bathroom at the northern end of the parking areas. This is not far from the old observation platform that is near the wooded part of the park. This is the first record for this species I have for Campbell County and the most northern record I know of in this part of Tennessee. If anyone else has seen them further north, I’m not aware of it. We then drove to Straight Creek, Claiborne County (the very end of Norris Lake), to try to find the Red-necked Grebe recently reported from that area. We did NOT see it. Thanks to all the birders out there that commented on Marcia Davis’s great article about Dollyann and me in this morning’s Knoxville News-Sentinel. The sentiment is much appreciated.
