TN-birders, Last Saturday at Sharp’s Ridge, we ran into an old TOS member, Maurice Grigsby. After chatting a while, he mentioned that he saw a raptor coming in to a pine tree at the bottom of Sharp’s Ridge, on Ludlow Rd. We went down that way and found a Cooper’s Hawk sitting on a nest. Location: Coming down from Sharp’s Ridge, bear left at the first “Y”, and this becomes Ludlow Ave. You will come to a railroad track. Just past the railroad track (going towards Broadway), there is a large pine tree on the right, mixed in with other deciduous trees. Stop below this tree and look up near the top. The nest is obvious and near the main trunk. There is a large limb that goes off to the left, but the nest in on the main, straight trunk. It’s only about 5 feet from the top of the tree. Nothing much happening at Eagle Bend fish hatchery in Anderson County lately. Some Solitary and Spotted sandpipers, but not much else. We did have a pair of Orchard Orioles there this morning. All the ponds are full, so very little shorebird habitat available. No Wilson’s Snipe today, after having them there for almost a month now. Great birding, Ron Hoff and Dollyann Myers Clinton, TN
