Yesterday I was boating on Barren River Lake in KY when I saw a Common Loon. It appeared to have something wrong with it so I (stupidly) decided to approach the bird in the boat and see if it was caught in fishing line or something. Well, even when the boat was just a few feet away the loon appeared to not be at all afraid. I thought maybe it had a broken wing or foot so I decided to try and catch it to make sure it was ok. After some effort I managed to pick it up but it didn't appear to have anything wrong with it. It bit and fought like a normal healthy bird. So now I have a question. Why did this apparently normal, healthy, adult bird allow me to pick it up and hold it? On a brighter note everyone i was with learned that loons are not ducks and got a chance to encounter the bird up close.
