I visited a site beside Chickamauga Lake to look for Greater and Lesser Scaups,
Pied-billed and Horned Grebes, and Common Goldeneye. On occasion, I have seen
each of these species and more at that location. The site was at a former boat
ramp off north Thatch Road off Birchwood Pike. The boat ramp now has large
boulders across the road to the ramp, but one can still park and walk 200-300
yards to the edge of the lake. I only saw Common Golden Eyes, but these
beautiful ducks were worth the trip! There were about 40 ducks in two groups.
High magnification binoculars were essential to identify them. They flew when
they saw me, but I was able to re-locate both groups with a spotting scope.
Incidentally, I also saw one Loggerhead Shrike on a fence near the south end of
Eldridge Road at a big curve on Birchwood Pike.
