Last night/this morning (06/15 - 06/16) after watching the synchronous firefly display at Elkmont, we came back through Townsend so we could connect to the Foothills Parkway. At the first major pulloff on the south end, we pulled over, rolled down the windows, and turned off the car. Within seconds, we heard our lifer Chucks-will-widow. We got out of the car and walked around, being able to see everything b/c of the moon, and heard a total of 5 Chucks-will-widow, 3 Whippoorwill, 1 E. Screech-owl, and 1 bullfrog (which we thought was odd!) across the next half-hour. The conditions were perfect, with the moon high and nearly full, no clouds, and a warm light wind. We also got to watch heat lightning over the mountains. It was truly a magical setting. The screech-owl was a life bird too. It's the one owl species that we have always missed for some reason, both here and in our home state of Indiana. Many thanks for Dean Edwards for his directions and encouragement to visit this location. Good birding, Angela Hoffman & Seth McConchie Angela M.
