This morning, Allan Trently and I spent some time at Chuck Swan Wildlife Management Area near Sharps Chapel, Union County in east Tennessee, about 30 miles northeast of Knoxville. This is an under birded area that may be worth a few more trips each year. Highlights were OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER, KENTUCKY & WORM-EATING WARBLERS (nest), and a possible HERMIT THRUSH!! (heard...I need to listen to a recording of its song to feel certain it was that) We heard several YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOOs and pairs of RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRDs. The hummers were usually chasing each other. It's a good place for YELLOW-THROATED VIREO, N PARULA, YELLOW-THROATED, PRAIRIE and HOODED WARBLERs. We also identified at least 15 butterfly species and several wildflowers. Not many dragonflies were there. Another highlight was watching a very fat Black Widow spider wrap a metallic green Tiger Beetle.
