On Tuesday, Sept. 21, I had a large flock of Chimney Swifts actively foraging through the Simerly Creek Road "valley" at my home in Hampton, TN, in Carter County. I conservatively estimated at least 75 swifts. At times, some swifts swooped quite low to the ground, possibly only 12-15 feet above the ground. I've seen bigger flocks of swifts, but not at my home. I also had six species of warblers â?? Hooded, Ovenbird, Magnolia, American Redstart, Black-throated Blue and Common Yellowthroat. The Hooded, a male, sang persistently for at least 10 minutes. Other migrants included Ruby-throated Hummingbirds, which are still fairly numerous at the feeders.
