You have reached Kevin Calhoon with the Chattanooga RBA, sponsored by the
Chattanooga Chapter of the Tennessee Ornithological Society.

This is Update Number #31 made on November 22, 2002.

The three White Pelicans were spotted a couple of times on Chickamuga Lake
in the Woltever Creek area at least up until November 12. (Todd Milsap, Dan
Williams). If I hear of any more reports I will relay them.

The StandiferGap marsh continues to produce good birds. An American Bittern
was seen on November 10 and Virginia Rails are still being heard. A Marsh
Wren was present on November 14 and the first report of Rusty Blackbird was
made there on November 14. (David Patterson)

A few Snow Geese are in our area with three at the Armstrong Ferry section
of the Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge (Meigs co.) (David Aborn) and one was at
Standifer Gap Marsh from November 15 through the 19th. (David Patterson)

Another American Bittern, 1 Rusty Blackbird, and a late female Common
Yellothroat were seen at the Brainerd Levee on November 15. (David
Patterson)

I (Kevin Calhoon) did a survey of the Tennessee River from Chickamuga Dam to
Vincent road on November 16: Birds of interest were around 30 Common Loon, 2
Horned Grebe, 10 Lesser Scaup and 1 Hooded Mergansers, 6 Bufflehead, 27
Double-crested Cormorants, and one immature and one adult Bald Eagles seen
from Booker T Washington State Park. (Another Bald Eagle was seen near
William's Island on November 7 by Maria Derrick). Fifty Bonaparte's and two
Herring Gulls were seen along with hundreds of Ring-billed Gulls.

Sandhill Cranes numbers continue to build at the Hiwassee refuge area with
225 present at Blythe Ferry on November 8 (Doug Geren) and over 2000 present
at Armstrong Ferry on the same date. (David Aborn)

A single Greater Yellowlegs was present at Blythe Ferry on November 8.
(David Aborn)

The flock of 16 immature Whooping Cranes and their ultra-lights, which
arrived on November 18, are still present at the Hiwasse refuge area waiting
for the perfect weather to fly as of November 22. If the conditions are
right on November 23 they will depart. Apparently juvenile whooper #6 (a
member of last years flock who migrated by following the ultr-lights and is
now on its own) has migrated down from Jasper-Pulaski (IN) and was seen in a
thermal with Sandhills on November 22. Keep your eyes open for this bird!

The next general meeting of the Chattanooga TOS will be on December 12 at
7:00
PM at the Accension Luthern Church 720 South Germantown Road.

Get out in the field and let me know what you see!
