This is Update Number #29 made on November 1, 2002.

Thrity-eight snow geese were reported near Nickajack Dam, Marion co. on
October 26. (John Gapchep)

Two WHITE PELICANS were reported from Blythe Ferry, Roane co. on October 25
and also Sandhill Cranes were heard. (Wally Akins)

The Stanidfer Gap marsh continues to produce good birds.  The only AMERICAN
BITTERN report of the fall came there on October 30. (David Patterson)
Virginia Rails and Soras are still present even though the Sora numbers are
thinning out.  It is possible that the Virginias may winter in small
numbers.  A Sedge Wren was reported on October 28 and Tree Swallows were
reported on the same date (David Patterson)  Sparrow numbers have picked up
in the fields bordering the marsh.  White-crowneds were first reported there
on October 27 as well as three Lincoln's. (David Patterson)  On October 14
seven species of sparrow were reported including Grasshopper as well as
House  and Sedge Wren, Indigo Bunting and Blue Grosbeak (Kevin Calhoon,
Bonnie Johnson, Judy Newsome, and David Patterson)  Two Vesper Sparrows were
reported on October 25. (David Patterson)

The Brainerd Levee produced some good birds on October 26 including:

1 Lesser Yellowlegs
1 Least Sandpiper
15 Wilson's Snipe
12 Wood Ducks
6 Gadwall
1 Green-winged Teal
2 Northern Shovelers
1 Virginia Rail
Palm warblers
1 Common Yellowthoat
13 Tennessee Warblers
1 Common Yellowthroat
- 7 species of sparrows including a LINCOLNS (finally) and a Vesper.

One Oranged-crowned Warbler was seen at the levee on October 26 (Johnny
Parks)

The Cravens House is still producing good birds with the first report of
Dark-eyed Juncos on October 18, first report of Winter Wren on October 18
and Hermit Thrush on October 27.  The first report of Brown Creeper came on
October 31.  (Kevin Calhoon)

A few warblers remain in the area, a single Magnolia was seen at Standifer
Gap marsh on October 28 (David Patterson).  Five Tennessee Warblers were at
the Cravens House on October 27. (Kevin Calhoon)  Seven species of warblers
including Blackburnian were along the riverwalk below Chickamuaga Dam on
October 19. (Kevin Calhoon) Palms and Common Yellowthroats will remain in
the area for awhile yet.

The record breaking fall continues at the Soddy Mountian hawkwatch.  Here
are the totals as of October 13: 27 Osprey (new record),  19 Bald Eagles, 7
Northern Harriers, 142 Sharp-shinned Hawk, 28 Cooper's Hawk, 4
Red-shouldered, 5071 Broad-winged Hawks (new record), 13 Red-tailed, 18
American Kestrels, 3 Merlins, 2 Peregrines.  The total of 5339 raptors is a
new fall record for the location.  More were added on October 27 with a new
record for Coopers Hawk with 17! (Bill Haley) 

Be on the lookout for more fall migrants and also the first winter residents
of the year.

The next general meeting of the Chattanooga TOS will be on November 14 at
7:00
PM at the Accension Luthern Church 720 South Germantown Road.
