[TN-Bird] Chattanooga RBA #17

This is Kevin Calhoon with the Chattanooga RBA, sponsored by the
Chattanooga Chapter of the Tennessee Ornithological Society.
This is Update Number #17 made on September 11, 2004.

The SOOTY TERN (second record for SE TN) found above Nickajack Dam (Marion
co.) on September 17 after the passage of Tropical Storm Ivan was not
relocated after the afternoon of the 17th.  Only a Caspian Tern or two has
been reported since.

An immature TRI-COLORED HERON was seen behind Boyd Buchanan School at the
Brainard Levee on Sat. September 18 and was still present on Sept 19.  This
is the only fourth or fifth record for Hamilton co. (Marty Paige)

Also present at the levee on Sept 19 were four AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVERS as
well as a few Lesser Yellowlegs. (Carol Fegarido, Marty Paige) These are the
first of the year for Hamilton county.

Fall passerine migration seems to be peaking.  David Aborn banded 7 Magnolia
Warblers, 1 Tennessee, 1 American Redstart, 3 Commmon Yellowthroat, one
House Wren and a Swamp Sparrow at his banding station along North
Chickamauga Creek(Hamilton co.) on September 18.  He also observed a Canada
Warbler in the area.

On Sept. 18 the Cravens House (Hamilton co.) yielded the first WILSON'S
WARBLER (male) of the fall as well as 1 Blue-winged, 1 Tennessee, 1
Chestnut-sided, 5 Magnolia, 4 American Redstarts, and 1 Hooded Warbler.
Also the first Rose-breasted Grosbeaks (5) of fall, a Eastern Screech Owl
and an immature Bald Eagle all between 5:00 and 6:00 PM EDT. (Kevin Calhoon)

Here are today's hawk totals at Soddy Mountain, TN, 9/18/04, 8:30-5:00 E,
winds 5-25 MPH, clear and sunny all day, visibility 40-65K, baro.
30.06-30.11, temp. 61-79F. Observers: Jim Rowell, Bill Haley, Debbie
Shannon, Roi Shannon, Jim Wilkerson, Harold Birch, Woody Woodiel, Becky
Woodiel, Nelson Bennett
 
Osprey - 2
Sharp-shinned Hawk - 1
Cooper's Hawk - 1
Red-shouldered Hawk - 1
Broad-winged Hawk - 387
Peregrine Falcon - 1
 
Also seen:
2 ad. Bald Eagles flying north
59 Double-crested Cormorants
5-6 Red-headed Woodpeckers
8 Monarch butterflies
5 Cloudless Sulphur butterflies
 
Notes: Peregrine Falcon first bird of the day at 9:40. Good northerly breeze
most of the day. First day of good flight weather since passage of remnants
of hurricane Ivan.
