The Chattanooga chapters field trip lead by John Henderson (his computer is down for about a week) was quite successful. The sky was a slight bit overcast so the heat wasn't it's usual problem. It had rained recently so there was no powdery dust and there were many great shore birds to pick through! Birds of interest included: Grasshopper Sparrow 3 At the parking area Caspian Terns 2 MARBLED GODWIT 1 Western Sandpiper 12 Least Sandpiper 20+ Solitary Sandpiper 4 Semipalmated Sandpiper 1 Semipalmated Plover 1 Stilt Sandpiper 1 Short-billed Dowitcher 1 Lesser Yellowlegs 1 White-rumped Sandpiper 1 Black-crowned Night-Heron 1 Pectorial Sandpiper 6 Osprey 2 or 3 Great Egret 2+ at the steam plant area and another 12 to 15 "white birds" in some trees across the river about a mile away. (Jimmy Wilkerson) I stopped by the Kinston Steam Plant on August 25 and had many of the same birds (minus the godwit) plus a Bairds Sandpiper. (Kevin Calhoon) A Snowy Egret was present at the Brainerd Levee on August 18 through at least the 22. (Betty Wampler, Kevin Calhoon) The horse pasture is dry at the levee but the habitat behind the school should be getting better for shorebirds as it dries. I (Kevin Calhoon) had one of my best August passerine movements ever at the Cravens House (Hamilton co., TN) on the 24th. With 8 species of warblers and 4 species of vireos. Highlights included: 5 Cerulean Warblers 1 Tennessee 5 Black-throated Green 2 Norther Parula 4 Chestnut-sided 2 Black and White 1 Worm-eating 2 Hooded 2 Yellow-throated Vireo 1 Blue-headed Vireo 2 White-eyed Vireo 4 Red-eyed Vireo 2 Baltimore Oriole 2 Scarlet Tanager 1 Summer Tanager 1 Wood Thrush 3 Indigo Bunting 8 Ruby-throated Hummingbird 2 Blue-gray Gnatcatcher The next general meeting of the Chattanooga TOS will be on September 11 7:00 PM at the Accension Luthern Church, 720 South Germantown Rd.
