[TN-Bird] Chattanooga RBA #1- Hiwassee CBC results

You have reached Kevin Calhoon with the Chattanooga RBA, sponsored by the
Chattanooga Chapter of the Tennessee Ornithological Society.
 
This is Update Number #1 made on January 2, 2004.

You can call the RBA at 423 -821-4381.

The Hiwassee CBC (circle includes parts of
Meigs,Rhea,Hamilton,McMinn,Bradely co.) was conducted on January 1 with 17
observers in the field.
The tally (so far) was one of the best in several years with 104 species!
Highlights included:
1 ROSS'S GOOSE
1 immature TUNDRA SWAN
4 WHITE-FRONTED GEESE
1 adult GOLDEN EAGLE
1 SNOW GOOSE
All of the above birds were seen by Bonnie Johnson and Judy Newsome at the
Blythe Ferry unit of the Hiwassee refuge.  And all but the eagle and the
White-fronts were seen by many as the sun was setting.
1 LINCOLN'S SPARROW - This was the first bird I put my Swarovski's on in
2004! (Kevin Calhoon)
1 GRAY CATBIRD
1 MERLIN - Found at the camp near the end of Armstrong Ferry road (Meigs
co.)
BREWERS BLACKBIRDS and PINE SISKINS were seen in the Gillespie Bend area.
(this area is in Rhea county in the north side of the count circle and
Tennessee River)
Despite the very high lake levels 15 Dunlin, Least Sandpipers and  a single
GREATER YELLOWLEGS were found.
2 more WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were found on Hiwassee Island.
The numbers have not been totalled yet, but at least 13,000 SANDHILL CRANES
were in the count circle!
