5/11/17Lake CoReelfoot Hickory Ridge Rd (levee road just west of Mud Lake)
Mark Greene found a Whimbrel early this afternoon in the big flooded area of
Reelfoot Hickory Ridge Rd. A marauding Eagle chased it off well before I got
there, but I birded out the afternoon in the area. Mark was around for a while
as well. Habitat is fantastic up there right now for shorebirds, and should be
some great birding for a while. I had 19 species of shorebirds along Robinson
Bayou Rd, among them 3 Black-bellied Plovers, all 5 expected (but not often on
same day) peeps, both Dowitchers, Stilt Sandpipers, big number of Dunlin and
about 50 Black-necked Stilts on the day.
My highlight, after missing the Whimbrel, was late this afternoon in the same
area having a Cave Swallow feeding amongst the numerous Cliffs and few Bank
Swallows. I was scoping the area, and had the bird fly thru my field of view
and was able to follow it for a few minutes as it fed. A shower started about
the same time, and the birds started dispersing.
Should be some great birding up that way along the Great River Rd and north
into Lake Co along the levee.
